Design Dilemma - Melissa's House - Update

Hi Melissa,

Thanks for updating us! Your progress looks great, and painting the bar in Café Miel looks like a good choice.  Some of your questions are about the wall areas that connect the different rooms. Below are some suggestions, but the great thing about your color palette is that all of the colors work well together, so there’s really no “wrong” decision!

1) Above the kitchen: Paint it in Riviera Dune.

2) Kitchen to living room: Paint the wall with the light switch in Churchill Hotel Maple and the 4-5 inch piece of wall in Riviera Dune

3) Round corners: Yikes!! A good quality blue painter's tape and a laser light for making straight lines will be your best friend here. You van find both at most hardware stores. With the laser light, you just press a button, and presto... a super straight line appears!

This may sound a little confusing, but first you should paint one of the connecting walls and the corner in one color. Your final product will look like the photo you sent illustrating your issues with round corners. Then create the create a laser lien from the floor to the ceiling in the middle of your round corner and place the painter's tape along the line. In this case you'd place it to the right of the line, so the left-side edge of the paint is matched up to the laser light. Then paint the second wall up to the painter's tape in the other color. Take off the painter's tape and voila - you have a perfect line on your round corner!

4) If you can solve the round corner issues, I would paint the two rooms in the suggested colors. This will give your home a greater sense of space. And I'd paint the 4-5 inch piece of wall in the "window" cut-out in the front-entry color, Riviera Dune. Again, I would carefully tape around the frame on the living room side to create a straight edge. Be sure to secure the tape to the wall before you paint so that you minimize bleeding.

5) For creating a straight line, try using the laser light to test what a line would look like down your hallway. Hopefully that will work. And regarding the old glue on the wall, is it possible to add an actual wood chair molding to cover it up?

Please let us know if you have any other questions and keep us in the loop with your progress. We’re excited to see the final result!
